  Midland Lutheran College...

  • Home of the heritage arboretum - an affiliate site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum
  • Is a conglomeration of 5 institutions; Luther Junior College, Fremont Normal School and Business College, Midland College, Western/Central Theological Seminaries and the Immanuel School of Nursing 
  • Provides 92% of full time students with financial aid
  • Alumni are represented by 20 individuals from five states on the Alumni Board.  Over the past five years, this group has set and met the goal of 100% participation in the Annual Campaign.
  • Boosts the local economy by 44.3 million annually

 


   OUR HERITAGE OF COMMITMENT
 

1883  

Classes begin October 18th at the new Luther Academy in Wahoo, Nebraska. The official dedication took place November 10th, the 400th anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth. At the end of the first year, 37 students had matriculated.
 
 

1884

Fremont Normal School and Business College opened in 1884, the same year that Mark Twain wrote Huckleberry Finn.
 
 

1887

Midland College in Atchison, Kansas is founded by the board of education of the General Synod, the largest and oldest Lutheran body in America. The name was selected because of its location midway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
 
 

1919

Midland College and Western Theological Seminary move from Atchison to the Fremont campus.
 
 

1929

Founded in 1928 by Oscar Lyders, the Midland A Cappella Choir took its first tour in spring 1929.
 
 

1941

Head Coach William “Speck” Nelson led Midland to its first undefeated football season. The team gained a national reputation as “Little Giants”. The college celebrated the championship by calling off classes for a day and holding a victory banquet.
 
 

1947

Men’s Memorial Hall was dedicated, giving honor to the 22 “gold star” Midlanders who died in World War II.
 
 

1962

Midland College and Luther College consolidated on the Fremont campus, becoming Midland Lutheran College.
 
 

1965

Swanson Hall of Science is completed, under the guidance of Dr. Gilbert Lueninghoener. The planetarium was named in his honor.
 
 

1966

Dr. Alcyone Scott joins the Midland faculty.
 
 

1973

Midland begins its nursing program in conjunction with Immanuel Medical Center of Omaha.
 
 

1984

The Anderson Complex is dedicated, named in honor of Mrs. Marie Anderson. The building became the new home for college and administrative services, the Dunklau Journalism Center, the Holling Center for Business Studies and the J.C. Anderson Conference Center.
 
 

1989

Head coach Jim McMahon leads the women’s track team to a national indoor title. He was named the NAIA coach of the year.
 
 

1999

The Cross at the Center Fountain is dedicated, offering a beautiful focal point for the campus arboretum.
 
 

2000

Warren Buffett visits campus and meets with business students to discuss sound investment strategies.
 
 

2003

A new institutional logo is unveiled, featuring the Cross at the Center Fountain.
 

2008

Midland Lutheran College celebrates its 125th Anniversary and launches The Campaign.
