Hopkins Renovation Topped Off With Donations From Warrior Alumni
The 2006-2007 season starts off with a new look to Hopkins gymnasium. This past year many changes have been made to the Warrior Athletic Facilities. For the track and field program the renovations to Hopkins have been a breath of fresh air. A new full pour surface accommodates track spikes over the entire gymnasium floor surface. Reorganization of the throwing area allows for the throwers to practice inside the track on the west end throwing toward the center of the gym. The long jump pit has been opened up and extended to the wall to accommodate sand. Finally the straight away has been extended into what used to be the small gym for a deceleration area.
The renovations to the facility have dramatically helped the layout and organization of practices. Yet, this facility wasn’t complete without a little help from the Track and Field Alumni. Money was raised for the indoor throwing cage and barriers to stop the implements from rolling into the jumping area on the other end of the gym. The netting on the new cage can be drawn up to the frame and then raised to the ceiling to be stored in-between practices or seasons. This new set up allows our throwers to have top of the line facilities and equipment and at the same time bring them inside the track to practice instead of practicing in the adjacent gym.
This years recruiting class helps christen the new facility with one of the largest and possibly the most talented recruiting classes in history. The 2006-2007 recruiting class consists of 34 incoming athletes with representatives from 10 different states. Fall conditioning has begun and all athletes are anxiously awaiting the beginning of the 2007 season on January 12th & 13th at the University of Nebraska. With a number of high powered athletes returning to the track and numerous athletes waiting to make their mark on Midland this should be an exciting year for Warrior Track and Field.
