Biography:

Dr. Alan Spurgin is a Professor of Education at Martin Luther College (MLC). He teaches Special Education (SPED) and Psychology classes to undergraduates in Studies in Educational Ministries and Studies in Pastoral Ministries. The courses he teaches include: Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Life-Span Development, and Educating the Exceptional Child. Dr. Spurgin teaches two SPED courses, Teaching Children with Learning Disabilities and Diagnosis and Assessment of Students with Special Needs, in the graduate program at MLC.

Dr. Spurgin has served for 42 years in the ministry teaching in various places and to a wide range of children. He has taught all eight grades as well as in a one room school. He has served as athletic director in an urban school and coached as many as seven different sports to elementary age athletes. Dr. Spurgin’s work with children with special needs as well as teaching future teachers about children with disabilities has been his passion for nearly half of his ministry.

Dr. Spurgin completed his Doctorate in Special Education from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota. His research in the area of Reactive Attachment Disorder included seminal work utilized in court cases in South Dakota and Iowa. He also continues to consult with teachers, parents, and children in the area of SPED and has a special place in his heart for children with special needs.

Dr. Spurgin grew up in Northern Wisconsin where he attended public schools. He attended Dr. Martin Luther College in the late 1960’s where he found his future wife Gerane (Plath). They married in 1969 and have raised three children as well as one hundred and four foster children. He enjoys his grandchildren, reading, and amateur baseball.
